Talking efficiency with the Maxx

By Sean Delaney

Everyone wants a great product for a deal, so the pursuit at Maxx Liquidation Solutions is a consistent drive to find the best products to sell.

“We know we’re only as good as the products we offer,” co-owner John Martin said. Martin, and his wife Melissa, own and operate Maxx Liquidation Solutions.

The business is an online auction and direct sales company located in Emery Village at 200 Bartor Road. Maxx partners with retailers, freight/logistics companies, manufacturers, and distribution companies. Those partnerships provide a steady flow of products to keep a 40-member team and more than 60,000 square feet of operation active. Through Maxx, goods are marketed and sold directly to consumers and wholesale buyers. They also host weekly consumer auctions offering thousands of items to consumers looking to save money on brand name items.

“Our twice monthly wholesale/dealer auctions offer resellers, independent businesses, online sellers and exporters hundreds of pallets, dealer lots and truckloads which allows buyers to bid on and buy the merchandise they can be successful within their markets,” Martin said. “Our Maxx Deals “buy now” product offering offers items at discounted pricing from retail with volume discounts for greater quantities, leaving great margin opportunity for wholesale buyers.”

Maxx opened in 2012 at a Dixie Road location in Mississauga. In 2014, it was time to expand, and the Dixie Road location was only a 5,000 square foot building.

“The lease was coming up, and we found this place,” Martin said. “The Highway 400 exposure, it’s incredibly central to the east side, west side, everywhere. We initially took the front third or 20,000 square feet. The next year we took the middle, and after that, we took over the back, and now we have our 60,000 square feet.”

Maxx began with a contract with a single freight company and has grown to relationships with some of the biggest retailers in the world, including Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot, and more. And Martin has discovered that a bit of proactivity can revolutionize what they are doing and how they interact with their clients.

“We’re pursuing more direct relationships with distribution, manufacturing, and freight companies,” Martin said. “We’re going to them, finding out what their issues are and how we can work together so they can recover the most amount themselves. We’re 100 percent client based, and at the same time, any customer that wants to get involved with us, we’re here 100 percent to save everyone money.”

And Maxx now has a business development strategist in place just for these relationships.

One who is ready, willing, and able to sit down with anyone in Emery to come up with a strategy where their business can find more efficiency. As well, Maxx offers a charitable service, in that any business looking to operate a fundraiser, can enquire about their auction services free of charge.

The Martins are also setting a new standard for management and leadership. Every revenue is shared between all responsible, as at Maxx Liquidation, 30 percent of company profits go back to the staff.

“We’re a very merit-based company,” Martin said. “It allows people to have financial freedom. So, when you are here for two years, you get that as a bonus. We know it’s a tough job, so we offer back that financial freedom, and we have a four-day workweek. It’s extremely tough work, and we like to acknowledge everything our staff does for us. Without them, we wouldn't be the success we are today.”
