Alka Kitchen Cabinets’ legacy

By Sean Delaney

Along Weston Road, one of Emery’s long-standing family businesses continues to quietly shape the heart of the home—the kitchen.

Founded in 1983 by the late Corrado Malandrino, Alka Kitchen Cabinets was a small, hands-on operation rooted in craftsmanship. Corrado, who brought his skills from Sicily to Toronto, built the company with values that continue to guide the business today under his sons Robert, Sam, and Paul.

“We grew up in this business,” Robert said. “Our father taught us everything—how to work with our hands, how to treat people, and how to take pride in what you build.”

That foundation has allowed Alka to evolve alongside changing lifestyles and design trends.

“Over the years, the business has evolved,” Robert said. “Design trends are always changing. Today, people are looking for clean lines, modern finishes, and layouts that are functional for everyday living.”

That shift goes beyond style. Kitchens today are no longer tucked away behind closed doors; they’ve become the true centre of the home. Open-concept designs allow families and guests to gather, connect, and share time together while meals are being prepared. It’s where conversations happen, where memories are made, and where the art of cooking is on full display.

With that in mind, Alka focuses not only on appearance but also on how a kitchen works. Thoughtful features like pull-out drawers, smart storage solutions, and efficient layouts make everyday life easier and more enjoyable.

“There’s a real difference when everything has its place,” Paul noted. “Good design makes the whole kitchen feel better to use.”

There’s also a practical side. In today’s competitive housing market, kitchens and bathrooms remain two of the most important features for homeowners. A well-designed kitchen can elevate a home’s value—and often be the deciding factor when it comes time to sell. For others, it’s about investing in a space that brings pride and enjoyment for years to come.

“It’s always been about relationships,” Paul added. “A lot of our work comes from repeat customers and referrals. That trust means everything to us.”

As the conversation wrapped up, Sam reflected on the people who have helped shape the business over the years.

“We’re really grateful,” he said. “To our clients who have trusted us over the years, and to the many long-time employees who have been part of this journey—some of them for decades. Their hard work and loyalty are a big reason we’re still here today.”
