A young entrepreneur named Nunzio Tumino launched a small importing company on St. Clair Avenue in Toronto 70 years ago with one goal in mind: to bring authentic Italian flavours to families building new lives in Canada. That company, Aurora Importing & Distributing Ltd., has since grown into one of the country’s most trusted and beloved Italian food distributors—and today, it proudly calls Emery Village home.
Founded in 1954, Aurora began as a modest operation helping Italian immigrants find familiar ingredients: pasta, olive oil, canned tomatoes, and biscotti that reminded them of home. Over time, it became a household name in ethnic and mainstream grocery stores across Canada, with a growing product catalogue that now includes thousands of items—from sauces, cheeses, and antipasti to sweets, espresso, and seasonal treats.
In 2020, Aurora moved into a modern facility at 350 Clayson Road in Emery Village, complete with a public retail store that offers a truly immersive shopping experience. Shelves are lined with authentic Italian imports and Mediterranean favourites, carefully curated for quality and taste. From artisanal pastas and hand-pressed olive oils to indulgent chocolates and specialty vinegars, each product reflects the company’s long-standing commitment to excellence.
The business is now owned by the Pulla family, who have embraced its rich heritage while steering it into a new era of growth. Under the leadership of President and CEO Joe Moscato and Chief Financial Officer Peter Dichio, Aurora continues to honour the legacy of Nunzio Tumino—delivering trusted products, nurturing strong customer relationships, and remaining deeply connected to the community.
“Aurora has always stood for quality and tradition,” said Moscato. “We’re proud of our past, but even more excited about where we’re going.”
Aurora’s gift basket program is especially popular, offering pre-made or custom-curated selections perfect for holidays, anniversaries, graduations, and corporate gifting. Whether you’re shopping for a festive table or looking to impress with gourmet presentation, Aurora’s retail team provides knowledgeable and personalized service.
The company is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a “70 Years Together” campaign, featuring in-store promotions, commemorative packaging, and community events that honour the generations of customers who have supported the brand.
In an age of convenience and shortcuts, Aurora Importing remains rooted in quality, family values, and culinary authenticity. It’s more than just a store or a warehouse—it’s a cultural bridge, connecting generations through the shared joy of great food.
On behalf of the Emery Village BIA and our entire community, I would like to personally congratulate Aurora Importing on this incredible milestone. Your presence has been a wonderful addition to Emery Village, and your commitment to quality and tradition makes our business area stronger. We are proud to celebrate your 70 years of excellence and wish you continued success in the years to come.
