First stop 31 Division: Community policing that makes a difference

By Sean Delaney

When people think about the Finch West LRT, they often think about trains, stations, and the businesses that line the corridor. But just north of Finch Avenue West stands an organization that plays an equally important role in the life of the community — 31 Division of the Toronto Police Service.

Led by Superintendent Jack Gurr, the officers and staff at 31 Division work every day to support the neighbourhoods they serve, including Emery Village and the surrounding area.

While policing is often associated with responding to emergencies and enforcing the law, the work of 31 Division goes far beyond that. Many of the officers are deeply involved in community outreach, youth programs, neighbourhood events, and initiatives that help build strong relationships with residents and local businesses.

Throughout the year, officers take part in activities that support the community in meaningful ways. From coat drives and Christmas toy drives to youth sports and local outreach initiatives, members of the division regularly volunteer their time to help make a positive difference.

Residents in the area have come to know many of the officers who serve the community, including Inspector Philip Sinclair, PC Leo Addo, Sgt. Gianni Filippin, PC Brian Moore, and DSC Deanne Taylor, who work closely with residents and community partners on local concerns and initiatives.

Recently, members of the division had the opportunity to ride the Finch West LRT, meeting staff and riders along the route and sharing in the excitement as the new transit line begins serving the neighbourhood.

Residents and families are invited to attend the 31 Division Open House on Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the station on Norfinch Drive. The event typically features police demonstrations, activities for children, music, food, refreshments, and opportunities to learn more about the work being done by the division.

Events like this help strengthen the connection between the community and the people dedicated to keeping it safe.
