Christmas Around the World

Christmas is celebrated in many different ways around the world, and some traditions may surprise you. In Germany, the modern Christmas tree tradition began in the 16th century, while in Ukraine, trees are often decorated with spider webs for good luck. In Italy, gifts are sometimes brought by La Befana, a friendly witch who visits children on January 6.

In many countries, Christmas is more about food and gathering than presents. In Poland, families share a special wafer before dinner as a sign of peace. In Ethiopia, where Christmas is called Genna, the celebration takes place in January and includes long church services and traditional games.

Even familiar symbols have unexpected roots. Candy canes were originally plain white and used to represent a shepherd’s staff. The word ‘Christmas’ comes from ‘Christ’s Mass,’ first recorded over 1,000 years ago.

Today, Christmas in places like Emery Village reflects this rich mix of cultures — a season shaped by traditions from around the globe, shared meals, and time spent together.
