Our Emery Village BIA – 20 Years in the making

By Sean Delaney

An interview with long-time local business owner Steve Sanderson of Accident Support Services

EVV: Steve, you are one of the founding members of the BIA; you must be very proud of their accomplishments?

Sanderson: As the founding chair of the streetscape committee 20 years ago, I can tell you that the small group you were included in had a vision for beautification and community development. Our group successfully executed this vision by paving Emery Village on Sheppard Ave and Steeles, making it the neighborhood brand. We accomplished this within the first few years that the BIA existed. The BIA Executive Director, Sandra Farina, has done an excellent job maintaining and developing the streetscape vision initiated 20 years ago. Under her leadership, the BIA (Business Improvement Area) has continued to invest in the beautification and community development of Emery Village.

EVV: Over the years, the BIA and its dedicated team have worked on various projects to enhance the streetscape and create an attractive environment for businesses and residents.

Sanderson: Yes, there are so many accomplishments of streetscape Improvements for Emery, such as what you can see along Islington Ave and Plunket Rd. Many of these improvement projects include installing decorative streetlights, tree plantings, flower beds, hanging plants, flags, branded banners, and more. These efforts have transformed Emery Village into an inviting and community-friendly area.

EVV: Many BIA community events have fostered BIA member businesses and community engagement.

Sanderson: The BIA has organized and sponsored various community events to foster a sense of belonging and engagement among residents and businesses. These events may include street festivals, job fairs, seminars, school scholarships, and Movies-in the-Park. Sandra Farina and the BIA have focused on supporting local businesses within Emery Village. They have implemented marketing campaigns, collaborated with local organizations, and provided resources and guidance to help companies thrive, especially coordinating information and resources during the Pandemic.

EVV: People recognize Emery Village as one of Canada’s largest and most successful industrial and commercial areas. What elements do you see as crucial to this success?

Sanderson: In part, we have had a successful run with enhanced security through the BIA for property and business owners and assistance with bylaw enforcement with issues such as parking violations. We’ve also had a great pool of labour due to our very diverse community, so we’ve got all kinds of skills with people in this community that we can pull from. I think it’s always been a very, very positive place to not only work, and you know, I can only see it getting better as we progress with the new transit system going in. It’s inconvenient, but we can go across the city once it’s completed.

EVV: It’s great to hear that you have a positive perspective on your village and its potential for growth and development.

Sanderson: Having a strong industrial and commercial base can provide numerous opportunities for employment and economic prosperity. Additionally, a supportive and skilled community can contribute to the success of local businesses. The mention of enhanced security is also essential for creating a safe environment for residents and businesses alike. It’s crucial to prioritize the well-being and protection of individuals and their properties.

EVV: You mentioned the availability of a diverse labor pool within your community, which benefits businesses looking to tap into various skills and expertise.

Sanderson: This diversity can foster innovation and contribute to the overall growth of the local economy. The anticipation of a new transit system is exciting as it can improve connectivity and accessibility within the city. Although the construction phase might pose inconveniences, once completed, it has the potential to enhance transportation options and facilitate more effortless movement across the city. Overall, you seem to have a positive outlook on your village and its future prospects. By leveraging your community’s strengths and embracing upcoming developments, you can contribute to the continued success and growth of your town and its residents.

EVV: Any closing thoughts?

Sanderson: I’m wishing everyone at the Emery Village BIA and all the members much continued success and prosperity, and I can’t wait to see what the next 20 years have in store.
