Healthwise in Emery A healthier start: four back-to-school checks for Emery Families

By Shelly Harris

Back-to-school preparation usually begins with supplies, schedules and transportation. For Emery families, it is also a useful time to complete four basic health checks: vaccination records, sleep routines, medications and a plan for sick days.

Vaccination records deserve particular attention this year. Toronto Public Health says parents and guardians are responsible for reporting a student’s vaccinations; doctors and nurses do not automatically submit those records to the City. Families can check a yellow immunization card or use Immunization Connect Ontario, commonly called ICON, to view and report information.

Ontario requires students to have certain routine vaccinations, or a valid exemption, to attend school. Toronto Public Health also provides school-based vaccines for Grade 7 students and catch-up opportunities for older students. Community clinics are available for families who need help completing a vaccination series or updating a record. Parents with questions should speak with a health-care provider or Toronto Public Health rather than waiting for a school notice.

Sleep is the second check. Moving bedtime and wake-up time gradually during the final week of August can make the first mornings less abrupt. A predictable evening routine, fewer screens before bed and enough time for breakfast can help students arrive ready to learn.

Families should also review asthma inhalers, allergy medication and other prescriptions. Check expiry dates, refill what is needed and make sure the school has current instructions and emergency contact information. Older students should know when and how their medication is used.

Finally, decide in advance what will happen when a child is unwell. Know who can provide care, how the school should be notified and where important phone numbers are kept. The goal is not a perfect first week. It is a healthy, organized start that gives every Emery student the best chance to settle in and succeed.
