Healthwise: August is National Wellness Month

By Shelly Harris RN

August is National Wellness Month, a gentle reminder for all of us to slow down and take stock of how we’re really doing. That means not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.

Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s smart. When we take care of our bodies and minds, we’re better prepared to handle life’s ups and downs. That doesn’t mean we need to overhaul our lives overnight. In fact, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference over time.

Try drinking a bit more water each day. Add an extra serving of fruit or veggies to your meals. Go for a walk after dinner, or explore a local yoga class. And don’t forget about sleep—good rest is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re not alone. Many of us put ourselves last between work, family, and everyday obligations. But studies show that regular self-care can improve happiness by over 70%. That’s not just good for you—it’s good for everyone around you.

This August, consider taking the “I Choose Wellness” pledge. Pick one small healthy habit and stick with it each day. Maybe it’s a daily walk, trying a meditation app, or even just sitting quietly with a cup of tea. Small steps can lead to big changes.

And remember—there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to wellness. What matters most is finding what feels good and works for you.

Let’s make August the month we check in with ourselves. Your health is worth it.

Until next time, take care of yourself and each other.
