Out and about in Emery: May is finally here

By Shannon Delmarco

There’s something about May in Toronto—you can feel the shift. The heavy coats are gone, patios start filling up, and the city finally stretches its legs again. And with the Victoria Day long weekend landing on Monday, May 18, there’s a real reason to get out and enjoy it.

If you’re looking for something different early in the month, the Toronto Tattoo Show / NIX 2026 (May 1 to 3) at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre is always an interesting walk-through. Even if tattoos aren’t your thing, the artwork and energy alone make it worth a visit.

From May 4 to 10, the Departure Festival takes over downtown. It’s a mix of music, ideas, and creativity, with pop-up performances and events that give the city a bit of buzz heading into the warmer weather.

Later in the month, starting May 20, the SING! Toronto Vocal Arts Festival brings live performances to venues across the city. It’s one of those events that feels a little unexpected—in a good way—and offers something quieter but still memorable.

Of course, the Victoria Day weekend itself is a classic. Fireworks will light up the sky on May 18, with Ashbridges Bay as one of the go-to spots if you don’t mind a bit of a crowd. It’s simple, but it’s part of the tradition.

And if you’re in the mood to mix things up, there are harbour cruises and evening boat parties on May 23, giving you a chance to take in the skyline from the water as the season really starts to turn.
