One space in Emery stands as a reminder of what vision and determination can achieve. Once planned as a small, overlooked parkette Joseph Bannon Park is not just a place to gather, but a lasting example of leadership, persistence, and purpose.
At the centre of that effort was Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, who pushed back against early plans and insisted the community receive more than a token green space. The original proposal would have placed a small park near the tracks—an area many felt was neither safe nor practical. Instead, a larger vision took shape: a central, accessible park where families, children, and residents could come together. Without that determination and care for the community, this space simply would not exist in the form we know today.
That vision did not come without effort. Community meetings were held, ideas were debated, and plans evolved over time. The process took patience, but it also brought people together with a shared goal.
“This wasn’t meant to be just a small park in the corner,” said Sandra Farina, Executive Director of the Emery Village BIA. “There was a real push to make sure it was something meaningful for the community—and that vision carried through to what you see today.”
What emerged is one of the few spaces in the area large enough to support multiple uses without compromising any of them. Open fields, a splash pad, and a skating rink have made the park a true year-round destination. The addition of a kiosk and upgraded amenities, supported in part by the BIA, has helped bring events and gatherings into the space, strengthening its role as a community hub.
At the heart of the park’s identity is the legacy of Joseph Bannon—a local resident, war veteran, and humanitarian whose life left a lasting mark on those around him. After witnessing hardship during his service, he made a personal commitment to helping children, a promise that shaped his life’s work and continues to be reflected in the spirit of the park today.
Fittingly, the park’s design reflects that connection. A statue of Bannon stands facing the fields and play areas, a quiet but powerful reminder of the values that helped inspire the space: care, community, and a focus on future generations.
As this story comes full circle, it is worth recognizing the leadership that helped make it possible. The vision and determination shown by Councillor Mammoliti ensured that this space became something meaningful for the people of Emery. For that lasting legacy—and for his care and commitment to the community—we offer our thanks. That appreciation is also shared by the Mammoliti and Bannon families, who can take pride in knowing that this park continues to bring people together and serve generations to come.
